Yesterday we received word that things were changing at Metaio. A customer of theirs reached out through one of the comments and let us know they were closing shop. I question what I read in the comments so I thought nothing of it. Later today I see it, BREAKING NEWS “Apple Acquires Metaio”. The commenter also stated he “would be losing his Metaio licensing and all loaded apps” (read comments at link). I really hope that’s not the case and that Apple continues to support Metaio customers in some fashion.
Metaio doesn’t make statement about customers with current licensing on their site. They do however state that purchased licenses will be available to download until December 15th 2015 and that email support will be available until June 30th 2015. This leads me to believe the worst for customers invested in their SDK. I’m curious to know what changes are coming and how Apple will support existing customers? There’s been a lot of hard work and man hours put in to learning and developing on their SDK. I truly hope Apple makes it a seamless transition for 1000 existing customers and 150,000 users world wide.
In a post dating back to March 2013 I wrote an article about Apple’s new AR patent. We knew then Apple was getting into Augmented Reality. Today’s acquisition news only bolsters their commitment and desire to enter the Augmented/Virtual reality space.
If you’re a Metaio customer you may be looking for an alternative SDK that you can build upon. Take a look at my Qualcomm Vuforia SDK review.
Please feel free to share any Metaio feedback in the comments!
